How many times do you wake up feeling anything but rested?
If you have trouble falling asleep, wake up several times during the night or just can't sleep, the reason may be the temperature in the bedroom.
Not paying attention to the degrees of the room can interfere with the quality of sleep: if it is too hot or too cold it is likely that you will experience sleep disturbances.
A temperature of about 18 ° C is considered optimal for a stable and deep sleep and, to be honest, it should never exceed 19 degrees.
You sleep better in the cool, but don't overdo it ...
The reason?
During the day, our body temperature rises and falls naturally.
The maximum peak is recorded around 15-16 in the afternoon, while the minimum peak is reached around 5 in the morning.
When the time comes to sleep, the body progressively lowers the body temperature to favor the onset of sleep, especially in non-REM sleep.
Sleeping al fresco, therefore, promotes falling asleep.
Sleeping in a room with the right temperature has many health benefits.
This is stated by science which, with lots of proven studies, has shown that sleeping in a cool place not only promotes a good restful sleep, but has many other advantages.
- Helps you stay young
Sleeping in a cool place facilitates the secretion of melatonin, a substance which, in addition to being essential for the correct sleep-wake cycle, is not surprisingly known as the rest hormone, but also has an anti-aging effect thanks to its antioxidant properties.
- Contributes to weight control
According to a study conducted by researchers at the National Institute of Health in Maryland, in the United States, lowering the bedroom thermostat significantly increases the amount of calories burned to preserve thermal balance.
In particular, it stimulates brown fat which is what burns fat to produce heat.
- Allows you to rest better
Sleeping cool allows you to rest better. If it is too hot, in fact, it is necessary to disperse heat, while if it is too cold it is necessary to reduce the dispersion to avoid interference with sleep.
It has been shown that if you sleep in an environment with temperatures above 21 degrees, you wake up more often, move more and reduce the chances of achieving a restful rest.
Temperatures that are too low are equally unfavorable to sleep as they make it difficult to fall asleep and cause unpleasant dreams.
Ideal temperature in winter: mattress and blankets
The common sense suggests, therefore, that in order to sleep well, the room should be neither too cold nor too hot.
However, it is not just a question of adjusting the thermostat.
You need to choose blankets at the height of the coldest temperatures that are able to retain heat allowing you to rest peacefully.
A good solution is to buy a mattress with thermoregulatory materials which, being thermosensitive, is able to keep the body temperature constant.
If you have a mattress with a summer side and a winter side, remember to turn it over according to the season.
